About the British Pattern 1914 - WWI Armoured Car I:

T.E. Lawrence, the famed Lawrence of Arabia, lauded the Rolls-Royce Armored Car as “more valuable than rubies.” The early armored vehicle boasted engineering finesse, mechanical reliability, and speed, and while it proved ill-suited for the static trench warfare of the Western Front, its use on the open battlefields of the Middle East foreshadowed the coming mobilization of warfare.

As World War I began, the Royal Naval Air Service developed the armored car atop the chassis of the luxurious Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost. The result weighed about four tons and could reach about 45 mph. It carried a Vickers .303 machine gun mounted in a turret, and its 8mm armor plating was enough to deflect small arms fire. Its speed and mobility were underutilized on the Western Front, but the British Pattern 1914 Armored Car proved the potential of mechanized warfare in the Near and Middle East. A testament to military engineering, it remained in services into the 1940s, serving in the desert in the early days of World War II.
