Bell® UH-1D Huey™ - Vietnam War Utility Helicopter

The iconic Huey is back! Debuting with U.S. forces in the Vietnam War, the Huey continues to be used by numerous militaries around the world today. Formally known as the Bell UH-1 Iroquois, the Huey initially was developed for the U.S. Army for medical evacuation, but it quickly proved to be an adaptable utility helicopter and took on numerous roles. As a medical helicopter, it saved innumerable lives by transporting wounded to aid stations quickly, but the Huey also was capable of search and rescue, general transport, and air assault or ground attack missions, bristling with rockets, grenade launchers, and machine guns.

The UH-1D variant featured a stretched fuselage to accommodate more troops and equipment. The upgrades made the UH-1D particularly well-suited for the air assault role, as Air Cavalry units could arrive on the battlefield fast and make quick ‘Dustoff’ evacuations. The door gunners provided covering fire, and Hueys often added custom mounts for rockets and grenade launchers. Over 2,000 UH-1Ds were built, playing a large part in making the Huey one of the most recognizable military vehicles in history.
