About the Bell® H-13 Sioux - MASH Medevac Helicopter:

Perhaps the most recognizable helicopter of the 20th century, the H-13 Sioux was a skeletal machine of steel tubes, Plexiglass, and exposed mechanics that seemed almost impossibly fragile but proved remarkably capable. Built by Bell Helicopter, the H-13 was the first helicopter certified for civilian use (as the Bell 47) in the United States. The bubble canopy provided excellent visibility, and the simple two-bladed main rotor provided stability and predictable handling.

In a military role, the H-13 was nicknamed the Sioux, after the Native American tribe prevalent on the northern Great Plains. During the Korean War, the H-13 pioneered airborne medical evacuation. As an air-ambulance, the H-13 carried two litter pods mounted externally along the skids, encased in clear protective shells. This unusual arrangement freed the cabin for the pilot and sometimes a medic, while keeping weight low and loading straightforward. The H-13 demonstrated that speed to surgery mattered more than armor, fundamentally reshaping battlefield medicine. In doing so, this delicate-looking helicopter helped establish the doctrine of rapid aeromedical evacuation.
