About the Bell® AH-1Z Viper® - US Marines Attack Helicopter

The current attack helicopter used by the US Marines light attack helicopter squadrons, the Bell® AH-1Z® Viper performs a vital security and air support role for America's amphibious fighting forces around the world. Based on earlier "Cobra" gunships, the current Viper has been upgraded extensively over previous versions. These upgrades includes all new "glass cockpit" displays, bearingless four-bladed main rotor for increased lift and ease of maintenance, a whole new suite of electronic sensors and countermeasures, and ability to deploy more advanced weapons systems, including AIM-9 Sidewinder, AGM-179 Joint Air-to-Ground Missile (JAGM), and 70mm SPKWS II guided rockets. Viper crew members have an increased day and night operations capabilities thanks to new helmet mounted Heads Up Displays that integrates with the improved nose-mounted FLIR and video systems. Each crew member also has nearly identical stations, so that weapons and flight controls can be used by both. The AH-1Z Viper shares 83% of mechanical and electronic equipment with the UH-1Y Venom utility helicopter, greatly simplifying maintenance and logistical requirements. This is important due to the global deployment and ship-borne nature of the Marines' light attack helicopter squadrons.

The Viper is deployed with US Marines worldwide and has seen combat operations in Afghanistan and anti-piracy missions off the horn of Africa.
