About the BA-10 Armored Car:
In the cold autumn of 1941, German forces surged toward Moscow and the Soviet Red Army faced a desperate struggle for survival. The Red Army cobbled together defenses before the capital city as fast as it could. Among the vehicles thrown into the fight was the BA-10, an armored car whose machine guns and cannon offered hastily mobilized soldiers a measure of firepower against an aggressive, battle-hardened invader.
Introduced in 1938, the BA-10 was built on a modified three-axle GAZ-AAA truck chassis. Its riveted armor provided protection against small-arms fire and shell splinters, but offered little defense against anti-tank weapons. With a crew of four, the armored car carried a 45mm 20-K cannon in a rotating turret, supported by two 7.62mm machine guns, and could reach around 53 km/h on roads. Fast and reasonably well armed, it proved a useful reconnaissance vehicle, although its wheeled design was poorly suited to deep mud, snow, and rough terrain.
As German troops approached Moscow, the Red Army was depleted and disorganized. BA-10s deployed alongside Soviet troops to face the German armor and mechanized infantry. While the BA-10s were no match for heavier German tanks in direct confrontations, they could conduct reconnaissance, escort convoys, and provide supporting fire against enemy infantry and lightly armored targets.
However, winter approached, bringing mud and snow that caused mounting mechanical difficulties that restricted wheeled vehicles. Still, BA-10 crews continued fighting during the desperate defense and the Soviet counteroffensive in December. Their contribution did not receive the fanfare awarded to the Red Army’s tanks, artillery and infantry, but they formed part of the improvised resistance that helped halt Germany’s advance.
