About the B-24® (J) Liberator® - Strategic Heavy Bomber:

In one of the best examples of the precision bombing in all of WWII, three squadrons of B-24 Liberator® aircraft destroyed key a Luftwaffe production facility in Gotha, Germany on February 24, 1943. Dropping an astonishing 98% of their payload on target and devastating the facility’s production capabilities in a single sweep. This raid cemented the B-24 as one of the Allies’ most trusted bombers. The purpose of the aircraft was to maintain the capabilities of the B-17, while giving the new craft a longer range, greater speed, and a bigger payload. These advancements made the B-24 ideal for operations such as convoy protection, long-range strategic bombing, U-boat hunting, and more. Serving in every theater of WWII, the B-24 changed the tide of the Allies’ Mediterranean campaign by striking critical targets in Italy, as well as German oil refineries, and were responsible for softening Nazi positions behind the lines before Operation Overlord. Officially retired at the end of the war, a total of 18,482 B-24s were produced, making it the largest scale production aircraft in American combat history.
