About the Aviatik D.I - WWI Hungarian Fighter Aircraft:

The Aviatik D.I was the first domestically produced, single seat fighter aircraft flown by the Austro-Hungarian Imperial and Royal Aviation Troops during World War I. Its designs stressed simple manufacturing techniques, in order to be produced in numerous small factory locations,by relatively unskilled labor. With over 700 aircraft produced in total, the design would evolved over time, with improvements introduced to engine, cooling system, structural integrity, and weapons configurations. Final models would be outfitted with a 225 HP engine and twin synchronized Schwarzlose machine guns.

Early models of the D.I were plagued by the teething problems that were common to equipment hastily introduced into production. Once all deficiencies were worked out, the D.I proved a fast and maneuverable fighter aircraft, that outperformed contemporaries in some aspects, such as the ability to reach higher altitudes. The D.I would see action with Austro-Hungarian aviation units on all fronts until the end of the war and was particularly favored for reconnaissance and escort duties. Although it never replaced the more prevalent Albatros D.III in the air-superiority role, the D.I would make a capable and important contribution to the war fighting effort.
