About the Autoblinda AB 41 - WWII Italian Reconnaissance Vehicle:
Speeding across the desert sands, the Autoblinda 41 (AB41) was one of Italy’s most capable armored vehicles of the Second World War. Entering service in 1941, the AB41 was a four-wheel-drive armored car developed by Fiat-SPA and Ansaldo for reconnaissance missions. Its mobility and armament made it well-suited for the desert fighting of the North African campaign.
With a six-cylinder engine producing almost 90 horsepower, the AB41 could speed along at roughly 50 mph with a range of roughly 250 miles. Distinctively, its dual driving positions allowed the AB41 to drive at speed in either direction without turning around, giving the vehicle notable tactical flexibility. The AB41 generally carried a 20mm autocannon mounted in a rotating turret and an 8mm machine gun, while a second 8mm machine gun was fitted in the rear hull.
The AB41 saw widespread service in North Africa during 1941, providing reconnaissance for the Italian army and German Afrika Korps. In the open expanses of the Libyan and Egyptian deserts, its high speed, long range, and reliable cross-country performance made it well suited to scouting ahead of advancing forces, maintaining contact between formations, and probing enemy positions. Although vulnerable to tanks and anti-tank guns, the AB41 proved highly effective in its intended reconnaissance role.
