About the Airco DH.2 - WWI British Pusher Biplane Fighter:

When it was introduced in 1916, the Airco DH.2 was one of the most radical aircraft of its time. Designed by famed aircraft innovator Geoffrey de Havilland, it used a pusher configuration, meaning that its engine and propeller were mounted behind the pilot. This unusual layout allowed a forward-firing machine gun without the need for a synchronization gear, which was still unreliable at the time. The result was a nimble, hard-hitting fighter just when the First World War Allies desperately needed one.

With its forward machine-guns uninterrupted by the propellor, the hard-hitting DH.2 arrived in the skies during the Fokker Scourge, when German Fokker Eindeckers dominated the aerial battlefield. But high above the trenches, DH.s squadrons fought back and regained control of the air. They were light and agile and could climb quickly, enabling the aircraft to excel in the twists and turns of dogfights. 

However, the pilot sat exposed in the open framework, with their guns ahead of them and engine behind. The aircraft was unstable and unforgiving. It demanded constant attention, but could be deadly when in skilled hands. Newer engines outclassed the Airco DH.2, but the aircraft ushered in an era emphasizing the daring and courage of fighter pilots.
