About the A6M2 Zero:

The Mitsubishi A6M2 Zero ranks among the most famous fighter aircraft of the Second World War, its name nearly synonymous with the use of air power in the Pacific Theater. Developed for the Imperial Japanese Navy, the Zero was renowned for its extraordinary range, speed, and maneuverability. It achieved its high performance with the combination of an exceptionally lightweight design, a powerful engine, large wings, and minimal armor and protection for the pilot. Its two 20mm cannons and two machine guns enabled the Zero to engage both aircraft and ground targets, and its long range was especially useful for a carrier-based fighter, allowing the Zero to accompany Japanese strike aircraft over great distances. The Zero was a formidable opponent early in the Pacific War, but its light construction left it vulnerable to damage, and it fell behind as Allied fighters improved.

The Zero rode into the spotlight through the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Launched from aircraft carriers positioned north of Hawaii, Zeros accompanied the attack waves and established Japanese air superiority over the harbor. They strafed American aircraft on the ground, attacked airfields, and protected Japanese bombers and torpedo planes from American fighters. The Zero’s maneuverability and range gave Japanese pilots an advantage during the opening stages of the attack, and its cannons made it effective against aircraft and ground positions. Although the attack primarily was carried out by bombers and torpedo aircraft, the Zero was essential to protecting them and suppressing American resistance. Watching the Zero over Pearl Harbor, Americans were introduced to an iconic symbol of Japanese air power.
