About the 40mm Twin Mount Mark V - WWII US Navy Anti-Aircraft Gun
The US Navy's 40mm Anti-Aircraft cannon was a mass-produced licensed copy of the gun designed by the Swedish firm Bofors. Placed in a wide range of mountings, it became the standard medium-range anti-aircraft gun on almost every ship in the United States Navy during World War II. This Mk V Mount features a pair 40mm automatic guns, on a motorized mount, which could be controlled locally or by separate computerized (and later on radar-assisted) gun directing device. A typical Twin Mount Mk V would be manned by 7 sailors (1 gun captain, 1 pointer, 1 trainer, 4 loaders + possible additional ammunition passers). The gun was fully automatic, with the rate of fire effectively limited by how fast the four-round ammunition clips could be loaded into the breech. While the 40mm "Bofors" was sufficient for most medium range anti-aircraft coverage during the war. However, in response to Japanese Kamikaze swarm attacks, the US Navy began replacing the 40mm with automatic 3" guns, which were better able to destroy oncoming high-speed aircraft at a greater range.
