About the 11th New York Volunteer Infantry - Fire Zouaves

11th New York Infantry Regiment was organized in New York City in May 1861 as a Zouave regiment, known for its unusual dress and drill style, by Colonel Elmer E. Ellsworth, a personal friend of US President Abraham Lincoln. The regiment drew its ranks from tough, athletic local firemen who were used to heavy physical exertion and became known as the “Fire Zouaves”. The men in the regiment were known for wearing bright red overshirts, dark blue trousers, and blue fezzes, often displaying their individual fire department badges. The Zouaves' first major combat experience occurred during the First Battle of Manassas (Bull Run) where they suffered extensive casualties. Although accounts of the battle differ, most sources list 177 men lost at Manassas, with 35 men killed, 74 wounded, and another 68 missing and presumed captured.
