About the Sd.Kfz.234/2 PumaWWII German Heavy Reconnaissance Vehicle:

Rumbling over challenging terrain and touting a powerful gun, the Sd. Kfz. 234 family of armored vehicles were highly advanced weapons of the Second World War that foreshadowed the wheeled tanks and armored fighting vehicles (AFVs) of today. Updating the popular Sd. KfZ. 231 design, the Sd. Kfz. 234 family still featured eight wheels, but further prioritized mobility and speed with an advanced chassis, 8x8 drive, and a powerful and rugged diesel engine that could operate in extreme temperatures. The Sd. Kfz. 234 family also carried stronger armor and heavier armaments, ranging from a 2 cm KwK 38 autocannon to a 7.5 cm howitzer or a 7.5 cm PaK anti-tank gun. These attributes made the Sd. Kfz. 234s valuable and deadly long-range reconnaissance cars on the Eastern and Western Fronts.

The Sd. Kfz. 234/2 variant, affectionately called the “Puma,” was the most iconic, with its fully-enclosed turret and 5 cm L60 gun. This turret and gun were originally intended for use on the Leopard tank, giving the Puma unusually strong firepower for a reconnaissance vehicle. The Puma packed a punch that allowed it to challenge lightly armored vehicles and even some medium tanks. While only about 100 were built between 1943 and 1944, the Puma’s combination of speed, firepower, and mobility made it one of the most respected armored vehicles of the Second World War.
