BRICKMANIA 401 (Released March 15, 2009)

FOKKER DR.1 DREIDECKER

Pieces: 324 genuine LEGO elements + Mauser pistol from BrickArms
Minifigs: 1
Skill Level: Sophmore (2 of 5)
Availability: Ships in 2-3 days.

The iconic plane made famous by World War One ace Manfred von Richthofen aka The Red Baron.

I absolutely fell in love with this model and felt compelled to make it into a kit after six year's hiatus from new Brickmania releases. The model is perfectly proportioned for minifigs (scale is 1 stud = 1 foot), is surprisingly sturdy, and is just plain fun to "swoosh" around the house.

The Fokker Dr.1 Dreidecker ("tri plane") is perhaps the most famous airplane of World War One. My model comes in the bold red livery of the war's top ace Manfred von Richthofen, who scored his final 20 of 80 victories in this fighter. In his own words Richtohofen described the Dr.1: "It climbed like a monkey and maneuvered like the devil." A total of 320 Dr.1's were built during the war and it served with distinction until being replaced by the more advanced Fokker D VII (arguably THE best fighter plane of the war).

Model Details: The kit is made up of 324 new LEGO elements (including a "Baron" minifig) and a pistol from Brickarms. Full-color printed building instructions (optional) and a signed certificate of authenticity are also included in the sealed box, which is also individually numbered and signed. As with all Brickmania kits, this design will be available for a limited time only and may be discontinued without notice.

I've always had an interest in military interest, and the Red Baron and his signature Tri-plane had always captivated my imagination. So when I saw
Brickmania was offering this kit, I knew I had to get one!rnrnThis being my first Brickmania kit, I have to say that Dan Siskind captured the look of
the actual plane in fine detail, and without decals mind you. The designs found on the original aircraft have been replicated with tile pieces and
bricks. There's also really great use of SNOT (Studs Not on Top) in forming the body of the plane, as well as the tail fin. The machine guns and the
working flaps are great touches, as is the minifig pilot with his BrickArms pistol.rnrnFor me, the overall build was an enjoyable one, as I picked up
on various techniques and uses for parts that I wouldn't have otherwise picked up on. The instruction manual was printed on high-quality paper and
was fairly easy to follow, although it was sometimes difficult to make out some of the details. So you'll have to slow down with this build and take
your time, but this is one of those models where you want to savor every moment of the building process as long as you can.rnrnAnd the final product
is amazing, and though it may not look like it, everything stays together quite well, even when shaking the model around. Though I will say that the
two parts that have a greater tendency to fall off are the tail fin and the caps on the wheels. It's nothing to really complain about though. Plus,
it's a fairly large model.rnrnOh yes, and the packaging! It's very professional looking, and I love the box art, which features a dogfight between
the Fokker DR 1 and a Sopwith Camel.rnrnOverall, I'd have to say that this kit was well worth the money, and you do yourself a favor and pick one up
while you still can!rnrn rnrnrn
