The General Purpose Utility Car (aka Jeep) was the result of a call by the US War Department just prior to World War II for a light-weight, four-wheel-drive vehicle with capable performance both on and off road. The Willys Overland provided the winning design, based on prior developments of the Bantam Car Company. The versatile design proved to be a war-winner, with more than 640,000 of the iconic vehicles produced for Allied forces from 1941 through 1945.
